Notes and Editorial Reviews
No one could pretend that Dvorak's solo piano music stands up either to his best orchestral and chamber scores or to the keyboard music of his more piano-wise contemporaries, from Gottschalk through Brahms to Fauré. But while it's rarely deep or especially idiomatic in its handling of the instrument, much of it has a melodic abundance and a rhythmic vitality that make it more engaging than its overall neglect would lead you to believe. Especially given the absence of the Kvapil cycle from the current catalog, therefore, the inauguration of Inna Poroshina's new series is most welcome.

Leslie Gerber, in an enthusiastic review of Poroshina's recent Liadov collection, praised her as a pianist capable of "poise, clarity, and poetry" (Fanfare 19:3). And if her new recital (more clearly recorded on what sounds like a better piano) emphasizes the clarity more than the poetry, in most of this repertoire that's a definite virtue. She gives the more rough-hewn episodes a well-aimed rhythmic kick; and in the more inward music (most importantly, the pensive episodes of the Dumka), her focus and textual astringency keep the music from turning sappy, as it so easily can.

Her performance of the Theme and Variations, widely regarded as the best of Dvorak's piano music, is especially impressive. Dvorak's music is sometimes heard, and performed, through a Brahmsian lens. But as many critics have pointed out, the Theme and Variations also has a kinship to the opening movement of Beethoven's op. 26. Kevin Bazzana's thorough notes work out the Beethoven connections in detail; and Poroshina's chiseled performance, which sharpens up the music's gestures and its characteristic harmonic lurches, confirms its Beethovenian spirit. She's effective in the lesser music too: The tipsiness of the early Polka registers well in her pungent performance, and even the second-rate minuets (really waltzes) come alive under her expert inflections. All in all, warmly recommended.
