The Broadway Album is the twenty-fourth studio album by director, composer, actress & singer Barbra Streis&, released by Columbia Records on November 4, 1985. Consisting mainly of classic show tunes, the album marked a major shift in Barbra Streis&'s career. Streis& had spent ten years appearing in musicals & singing st&ards on her albums in the 1960s. Beginning with the album Stoney End in 1971 & ending with the album Emotion in 1984, Streis& sang mostly rock & disco oriented songs for Columbia records. Noted Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim personally penned additional lyrics for the songs "Putting It Together" & "Send in the Clowns" on request of the singer.

The album, originally released on the Columbia label & subsequently re-released by Columbia & Sony Records, was a critical & commercial success. First certified gold by the RIAA on January 13, 1986, it reached four times platinum on January 31, 1995. This album has gone to sell 7.5 million copies worldwide.
The album was accompanied by a television special, Putting It Together: The Making of the Broadway Album. The original LP & cassette releases contained 11 tracks. The subsequent CD release added the bonus track of "Adelaide's Lament".

Review by William Ruhlmann:
Barbra Streis&'s ab&onment of Broadway was the worst thing that happened to the theater in the '60s. Her retreat from theater music on record was less of a loss, if only because she had tended to focus on second-rank composers & obscure songs by first-rate ones, while practically ignoring, for example, Stephen Sondheim. When she returned to show songs in 1985, she reversed these failings. Now, the singer who had never done much with Rodgers & Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, George Gershwin, or Jerome Kern finally felt confident enough to take on "If I Loved You" from Carousel, "Adelaide's Lament" from Guys & Dolls, "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" from Showboat, & a medley from Porgy & Bess, & she did them well. Even better, on seven tracks with Sondheim's name on them, she proved the perfect intepreter of the most contemporary & intellectual of Broadway's writers, whether singing his lyrics over the music of Leonard Bernstein (another composer she'd largely neglected) from West Side Story or making the most of material drawn from shows like Company, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, & Sunday in the Park With George. Sondheim collaborated with Streis&, penning special lyrics for songs like "Putting It Together" & even his st&ard, "Send in the Clowns." The result was an album that repositioned some of Broadway's best in a pop context & showed that Streis& was still at her best when presenting the dramatically satisfying story songs of the theater. Apparently, many longtime fans agreed: At sales over three million, The Broadway Album was Streis&'s most commercially successful album in five years.
