Animation Mentor: Understanding Animal Locomotion

This lecture series began by exploring quadruped walk fundamentals. Now it’s time to explore more complex movements in greater detail.
Jim Brown, Animation Supervisor at Tippett Studio, gives an overview of the many ways quadrupeds move - and inspires and prepares animators to continue exploring this vast topic on their own. Jim covers the basics of quadruped gait variations and movements, including the timing and sequence of footfalls in various forms of locomotion; considerations to convey weight, force, and momentum unique to quadrupeds; and ideas for transitioning from one form of locomotion into another.

You understand body mechanics and now you are ready to take it to the next level with creature animation. This workshop is tailored to teach you the essence of animal and creature locomotion – how an animal or creature runs, walks, senses, stops and turns. Use your power of keen observation and challenge yourself to learn to animate believable creatures from top professional animators.

The Industry Need
The entertainment industry is always looking for animators with a broad skill set and creature animation makes your demo reel a standout at studios like Industrial Light & Magic, Blizzard, and commercial and television FX houses that deal with realistic animation. Animation Mentor Co-founder and ILM Lead Animator, Shawn Kelly, describes why solid creature animators are needed.

Start Animating
Use our Dozer, Hatch, Ogre, Cat, Lion, or Fuzzbot rigs and start animating with 3 challenging assignments: a walk- cycle, a locomotion shot, and a behavior shot. These assignments are tailored to help you understand the essential body mechanics of realistic animation.

Professional Animators Mentor You to Be Successful
Our creature mentors have over 100 film credits combined and are from well-known studios such as Industrial Light & Magic (Star Wars, Transformers) and Sony Imageworks (Spider-Man).
